Rear hoof of a giraffe
A hoof (plural: hooves) is the foot of an ungulate, all of which walk more or less on their toes and have toes with a "horny" (keratin) covering.
Hooves of most even-toed ungulates (including sheep, goats, deer, cows, bison, and pigs) have two toes. A two-toed hoof is a cloven hoof. Hooves of some odd-toed ungulates (including horses) have one toe; others (including rhinoceroses and tapirs) have three toes. The tapir is a special case, with three toes on each hind hoof and four toes on each front hoof.
The number of toes is considered in determining the kosher status of the animal\'s flesh.
Hoof, Pennsylvania Dutch word for “White Trash”, slang and other forms include hoofnick and hoofer. (Slang not recognized by "True Pennsylvania Dutch"). Pronunciation of words are as indicated, spelling is believed as indicated.
